Girls Working in Laundry Lewis Hine Photograph

Lewis Hine (American, 1824-1940): Hine and the National Child Labor Committee reproduced many of his images in national publications and exhibitions by 1913. Hine despised the appalling conditions in which recent immigrants, particularly children, were compelled to work, as evidenced by his images taken on Ellis Island. The original image dates to either 1913 or 1920. This image was originally from the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY. It was part of a deaccessioned collection from Eastman that became part of an extensive private collection of black and white American photographs detailing the American experience during the first half of the 20th century.
