Excerpt: “Present appearance of the region: During the five years that have elapsed since 1878, great changes have taken place in the outward appearance of the wilderness, and especially traveled routes road leading into the interior and along the larger streams and lakes which form the highways of this wild Venice of the forest.
The ancient city of the Doges has no scene more bright and varied than the weird and romantic splendors of the lakes of Blue Mountain upon a fete night, gleaming and flashing to hundreds of electric lights from the grand structure upon its shores, while boats lighted with many colored lanterns flitting to and fro like fire-flies appear and disappear to the deep blaze of colored fires and light.”
