Shop this New Hampshire landscape painting for sale of Shelburne, New Hampshire, signed John F. Carlson. Carlson was a Swedish-born American Impressionist artist, teacher, and writer. He was known for his romantic landscapes of the West, the Canadian Rockies, and his winter scenes.
He moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1884, taking an early interest in art; Carlson studied under Lucius Wolcott Hitchcock in Buffalo and studied with American landscape painter L. Birge Harrison at the Byrdcliffe Colony in Woodstock, New York, in 1904. Carlson began exhibiting work nationally and received a scholarship to study Landscape painting in 1906.
Carlson found success at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition of 1915, and in 1925 he became elected to the National Academy of Design. Carlson wrote the book Elementary Principles of Landscape Paintings, published in 1928.
This work signed John F. Carlson on the lower right edge of the painting. The reverse of the painting signed Shelburne N.H. Sept 10, 190”. We list this work as attributed to Carlson; while it may be a work by Carlson, we cannot confirm the authenticity of this painting of this work. It is noted this work came to us from a Buffalo, New York collection, an area in which Carlson lived. This watercolor painting is signed on both the front and the back, dated, and inscribed with a location.

Condition
The sheet displays elements of toning and water stains. Mainly on the reverse and the margins of the front. The reverse with mounting tape and framing tape residue.
