Product Information
This 19th-century watercolor painting, attributed to Barbizon artist Jules Dupre is a charming and warm landscape in a delightful gilt decorated frame perfect for various interior decoration settings.
Signed “JD” in the lower-left corner of the image, Jules Dupre (1811-1889) was historically responsible for introducing the narrative of the English landscape style to France and blending it with the style of the Barbizon school, which included artists such as Theodore Rousseau. Leading to Impressionism, the Barbizon school eventually gave way to the later style, and Dupree integrated a manner of Impressionism in his later works. However, he always remained a painter in the Barbizon manner and landscape aesthetic.
While this painting is marked JS, many Barbizon paintings are attributed to the artist. This included Rousseau, Depre, Charles-Francois Daubigny, Jean-Francois Millet, and other artist tied to the period. The Barbizon school was part of an art movement towards Realism and fully embraced the narrative of Landscape painting—a departure from the figural and historical focus of art during earlier periods; this style flourished between 1830 and 1870.
This painting is often in the watercolor format for Barbizon studies. This painting is wide and stout in its panoramic style view of the French countryside. This painting has come to us from a Cleveland, Ohio art collection and was acquired via auction sale. While the distinct connection of this work to Dupre is a challenge, this painting does appear to be of the period, and the paper is consistent with the age of the artist.
