Product Information
Tolkien first intended Smith of Wootton Major, which was originally published under the title The Great Cake, to serve as an introduction to George MacDonald’s well-known fairy tale, The Golden Key. The little community of Wootton Major, well known for its yearly food festivals, quickly developed into a story unto itself throughout the narrative. Without the drawings by Pauline Baynes that debuted in the current publication, the novella was initially released in the United States in the 1967 Christmas edition of Redbook.
