Product Information
Marion Post Wolcott was a renowned American photographer who spent her career documenting everyday life in the United States. From 1938-1942, she was commissioned by the Farm Security Administration to document the effects of the Great Depression on rural America. The resulting photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of the American South during this period. One of her most famous images is “Elaborate gas station,” which shows an ornately designed gas station. The original records indicate her comment on the following photograph was “even the gas stations in Miami Beach are on an elaborate scale, often modern design, resembling hotels.” Today, Marion Post Wolcott’s Gulf Coast photographs are housed in the Library of Congress, and they continue to provide insight into a bygone era. This original silver gelatin photograph dates to the 1960s and includes pencil notations in an unknown hand, and retains the original Library of Congress stamp. The image cataloged as LC-USF34-051227-D
