Japanese Pottery Decorative Bowl

This pottery bowl is created in an Oribe glaze, or Oribe ware, also known as Oribe-yaki. It is a style of ceramics that dates back to the 1500s. Oribe ware is a type of Japanese stoneware characterized by its departure from the monochrome coloration characteristic of Raku ware. This teaware bowl is created in the Green Oribe or Ao-Oribe. Green Oribe is recognized by the green copper glaze and, like many teaware vessells, its unbalanced shape. Common painted designs on Oribe include primitive interpretations of flowers and sometimes animals and mythical creatures. This form of Ao-Oribe originated from the Yashichida kiln in the Okaya group and is considered the most recognized form of Oribe ware, characterized by its vibrant green glaze and contrasting white background.

This Japanese pottery bowl for sale is estimated to have been created during the Showa era during the early 20th century. Notable modern 20th-century artists practiced in the Oribe ware pottery tradition are Yasuo Tamaoki and Osamu Suzuk. The vessel’s underside displays artist studio stamps, which indicates the artist and studio that handcrafted this example.
