Product Information
This ojime bead Japanese, Meiji period is decorated with molded floral motif and marquetry inlaid pearl ornaments. It is further accentuated with an elegant gilt veneer made presumably of bronze.
Ojime beads have been used in Japan for several centuries from the Edo period and onward, serving as the chord fastener for inro or sagemono. A case is worn to hold valuables such as signature seals or medicine. In addition to the inro or sagemono and the ojime, a small decorative carving called a Netsuke would be used to hold the chord and case through the belt worn on a kimono.
Ojime beads are still traditionally worn today during formal ceremonies. However, they are now worn and collected more commonly in combination with multiple beads as necklaces and bracelets for jewelry, or they are considered an okimono for display.
This work is attributed to the golden age of Japanese imperial design of the third or fourth quarter of the nineteenth century. It is a fine example of a master artisan.
