These vessels are generally carved from bamboo or jade and decorated with elaborate designs that represent notions such as long life. In order for the bundles of hair to maintain their form and point, the brushes would be washed and placed in the pot with their handles down. Examples from the past are today highly sought for and appreciated. This artist-signed example is inscribed with carved calligraphy script and is a fine example of what is often referred to as Chinese scholar’s objects.
