Japanese Lacquered Pottery Bowl

This unique bowl features an interior painted in the Oribe manner with bright green glaze on the interior wall under a textured off white crackle glaze. The exterior of the five-sided circular lobbed bowl features a stunning dark brown lacquer ground with gilt decorated botanicals, a similar style appearance to European Bottger black glazed stoneware of the 18th century. The lily pad style rim the with gold lacquer. This unusual pottery bowl incorporating a glazed lacquer exterior and Oribe style interior found in a known example attributed to the artist Toyosuke (1788-1858) and this bowl of a similar appraisal.

Toyosuke was known for his lacquer applied decoration to polychrome ceramics and pottery, a technique referred to as Toyosuke-raku or Horaku-yaki. This unique bowl displays a wonderful contrast between the interior and exterior of the bowl and retains elements of both traditional Japanese ceramics, familiar elements of what is known as the chinoiserie style, in the gilt-decorated over a dark brown or black lacquered surface, and also elements of the Oribe splashed glaze style of ceramic decoration found on the interior of the bowl. It is a wonderful decorative bowl and object for any modern or timeless interior.

The bowl measures 2.6 inches in height and measures 3.3 inches in diameter.

The bowl displays minor edge chips and imperfections, the gilt-decorated rim has possibly been repainted, and the gilt decoration on the glazed brown lacquer surface with fading and wear.
