Attributed to renowned Japanese potter Shimaoka Tatsuzo, Tatsuzo was the student of Hamada Shoji (1894-1978) and is regarded as one of Japan’s leading Mingei potters. Shimaoka used a variety of techniques in his pottery including his use of the Jomon zogan technique of rope-impressed stoneware which covers the top section of this dish. He was also known for his use of slip decorating techniques similar to those used by Korean potters during the Joseon Dynasty.
