Shop this Deposition of Christ painting for sale. This original oil on copper panel painting dates to the 16th-17th century circa 1550-1600. The painting depicts Christ’s descent from the cross, also referred to as the Deposition of Christ. The scene represents the Gospels’ accounts of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus taking Christ down from the cross after his crucifixion (John 19:38–42).
The subject of Christ’s descent from the cross became popular in the 9th century in examples of Byzantine art and in the 10th century in Western art examples. The circular cut copper panel is painted in what is formally referred to as the Prague school is framed in a hand-painted octagonal-shaped gilt decorated frame with red painting tendril designs. The painting includes a palette of intense blue and reds and well-articulated figures center. The painting is a beautiful masterwork painting well suited to any collection intent on collecting fine 16th and 17th-century master paintings.
The theme of the Deposition of Christ is a popular narrative across the scope of old master paintings. Such examples by Caravaggio and his depiction of The Deposition is considered one of his best paintings among academics. In Caravaggio’s example, he did not depict the Burial or the Deposition traditionally, because Christ does not appear precisely when he is laid in the burial chamber, but rather when, in the presence of the heavenly ladies, he is laid by Nicodemus and John on the Anointing Stone, which is the stone with which the catacomb will be sealed, as shown in the image below. A circle of people surrounds Jesus and includes the Virgin, Mary Magdalene, John the Baptist, Nicodemus, and Mary of Cleophas, who offers her arms and eyes to heaven in a stunning display of tremendous pressure and feeling.
