The image taken by Sheldon related to the United States, Michigan, Genesee County, and Flint and documented the auto workers strikes in Michigan during the 1930s.
The Farm Security Administration (FSA) was created in the Department of Agriculture in 1937. The FSA and its predecessor, the Resettlement Administration (RA), were New Deal programs designed to assist rural communities during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. Roy Emerson Stryker was the head of a special photographic section in the RA and FSA from 1935-1942. During its eight-year existence, the section created the 77,000 black-and-white documentary still photographs (at the Library of Congress). The Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information Collection’s black-and-white photographs are photographic landmarks in the history of documentary photography and 20th-century American history. Among the group of FSA photographers, Sheldon was a belonged toa wealthy industrialist family and self-funded an array of series of literary and artistic endeavors. As such, he had the greatest independence among the group FSA photographer that included Marion Post Wolcott and Walker Evans.
This silver gelatin photograph was taken by Sheldon Dick during his first year of working for the FSA between 1947-1948. This photograph dated to the 1960s-1970s and includes a faded and partial “Reproduced from the collection of the Library of Congress”, with a handwritten inscription of the title of the photo, date of “Jan-Fec 37” and “photo by Sheldon Dick” also written in pencil on the reverse of the sheet. The photograph part of a large collection of WPA and FSA photographs acquired from a Washington D.C. art advisory and brokerage group.

Condition
The photograph displays circular edge loss to the margin edges. The photograph surface displays minor abrasions and surface imperfections with markings and notations on the reverse.
