The sheets reverse with a Library of Congress hand stamp on the verso. The original photograph negative dated to September of 1938. This photograph dates to the 1960s. The back of the sheet with pencil notations, inscribed, and with Wolcott’s signature, title, negative date, and with inventory and printing notations, in pencil, on verso, as “Sep ’38 M.P. Wolcott, Miner Chaplin West Virginia. The black and white photograph depicting a coal miner walking down a railroad track holding a pickax and covered in soot. The image taken by Wolcott represents a more extensive portfolio of images taken during her assignment in West Virginia, highlighting the plight of rural Americans after the great depression.
