This 19th-century wall art print tells the story of Abel killing Cain. In the image, Abel shown covered in a sheepskin cloth, dead on the ground. The image details an altar of fire beyond the brush and a dog approaching Cains body from the right. The etching is titled “Abel”, with further lettered inscription in the inner margin edges, Rubens pinxit J. Heath, A.R.A. sculpsit. With a further stamped inscription of London, William Miller, MDCCCX.” This drypoint etching was acquired by means of a collector of art prints that previously had acquired the work through a museum collection. Based on available research, this work was created in 1810.
Dimensions
The unevenly trimmed sheet measures 13.125 inches by 19.25 inches, and the image measures 8.25 by 10.25 inches.
Condition
The sheet displays unevenly trimmed margins edges, some toning to the paper, and light abrasions margins on the margin edges of the paper. The bottom of the sheet displays elements of catalog accession numbers and mounting residue on the reverse of the sheet.
