This Gihachiro Okuyama landscape woodblock print for sale is a charming evening winter landscape in the Sosaku Hanga and Shin Hanga artistic style. Sosaku Hanga, or “creative print,” and Shin Hanga, or “new print,” movements were greatly influenced by Western Impression while retaining the classical elements of traditional ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock prints.
Gihachiro Okuyama was known as both a commercial artist and a woodblock printmaker. This work composed in shades of black, white, and grey reflects the self-made or self-published Sosaku style woodblock prints opposite the colorful and European influenced Shin Hanga prints created by Okuyama.
Sosaku Hanga prints emphasized artwork that is “self-drawn”, “self-carved,” and “self-printed,” similar to the Mingei style of folk art prevalent during the early 20th century.
