Product Information
The James D. Havens color wood landscape engraving “Wind and Snow – 1938” is a beautiful example of the artist’s work. The detailed carving and careful use of color bring the scene to life, creating a feeling of depth and movement. The carefully chosen composition highlights the majestic mountains in the background, while the foreground features a small cottage nestled in the snow. The artist has expertly captured the feeling of a winter day, with the snow gently falling and the wind blowing through the trees. This engraving is a stunning example of James D. Havens’ artistry and skill as a wood carver. James D. Havens (1900–1960), a self-taught printmaker, established his own studio in Fairport, New York in the 1930s after becoming proficient enough. Alling Clements, a painter from Rochester, and Havens were close friends and frequently collaborated on paintings. Havens belonged to a number of art organizations and was chosen as an Associate of the National Academy in 1951. Many museums and galleries, such as the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester and the Brooklyn Museum, have his work in their permanent collections.
