Excerpt: “It has been my privilege to have been with you since our first organization in 1863, and I can speak intelligently when I say that society has steadily progressed from the first. We have grown in numbers and in strength until we are professionally and legally recognized in common with older medical organizations. The times in which we live are auspicious for the advancement of human knowledge. We witness the march of progress in every department of science, art, literature, and mechanics, and I am happy to say that the art and science of medicine are making progress in the right direction”.
