Shop this Chinese painted pottery horse and rider sculpture for sale. The Chinese pottery sculpture dates to the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534) or later. The figure of a soldier in a full-sleeved robe over trousers, turning to the side and holding a drum in one hand with his other arm raised poised to strike, seated astride a horse standing four-square on an oval base, with saddle, trappings, and harness in relief and traces of pigment. The sculpture is mounted on a custom wood stand carved stand. The sculpture was acquired from Ralph M. Chait, New York, circa the 1920s. The underside base includes original heavily worn labels from Chait’s galleries in New York on the underside.

The figure has repair and pigment loss.
