Product Information
Shop this Makonde People Tanzania scepter statue for sale, dating to the 20th century. In the art world, the term Makonde refers to sculptures from East Africa or, less commonly, to modern paintings made by artisans or painters who are members of the Makonde people, who live in northern Mozambique and southern Tanzania, which are divided by the Ruvuma river. It is a genre of African art that has been developed by art historians, dealers, and collectors and may be split into two subcategories: African traditional ceremonial objects, artistic works ad sculpture.
These works date back to the 1930s when they were displayed at the Centro Cultural dos Novos in Mozambique in what is considered to be the world’s first documented exhibition of Makonde art. Much earlier, before the emergence of the commercial interest in Makonde woodcarvings, the aim of this art form was in the portrayal of demonic spirits during rites of passage ceremonies in Africa. In particular, male initiations into maturity. The scepter is hand-carved from a single piece of wood and bears the original museum accession number under the base from the original collection of origin—the painted black base and mounting circa 21st century.
