Shop this vintage bronze male sculpture for sale. Dating to the 1950s and acquired from a New York artists collection, this posing male figure is displayed in a contorted position with their arm hungover and behind their head. The figure appears to be seated on a tree trunk. We estimate this bronze sculpture to have been made c 1940-1960, circa 1950. The naturally formed seat of the male forms is presented with the artist’s initials of “EW”.This work for sale sits on the 19th-century black marble base that is not original but adds a classical element to the overall artistic composition to the abstract modernist formation of the seated figure.
The sculpture is created in the spirit of The Thinker (French: Le Penseur) by Auguste Rodin, known initially as The Poet (French: Le Poète). In Rodin’s sculpture, The Thinker was part of a major commission for a gateway surround known as The Gates of Hell, which began in 1880 and was completed in 1881. Rodin based this work on Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and served as inspiration of countless artists.

This statute measures 8.75 inches in height. The marble base of the measures 3.5 inches wide.
Condition
The bronze displays signs of oxidation with variations in tonality and color—the rough bronze surface with dust in the crevasses from its exposure to the elements over the year. The marble base with wear and fading and the underside felt padding with wear, fading, and loss.
