Shop this Chinese Gilt Metal Tang Dynasty Style Teapot for sale. Dating to the 20th century, this ewer-style teapot is most probably composed of copper alloy. Decorations depicting mythological figures are applied to the vessel’s body in repousse gilt design. The teapot’s mouth is decorated in the shape of a rooster, which represents the Chinese zodiac animal. This hand-made ceremonial style ewer pays homage to the function metalwork of the Tang dynasty.
Despite the fact that gold and silver in the form of hammered fragments had been used as an inlay on bronzes as early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties, these metals were only occasionally used for jewelry and other types of ornament during the subsequent Han and Northern and Southern dynasties. It wasn’t until the Tang dynasty that a significant number of functional objects made of or decorated with gold and silver were produced. A critical role in the development of metalwork during the Tang period was played by the close contacts that existed between China, Central Asia.
