This scagliola panel for sale dates to the 18th century. Handcrafted in Italy circa 1740-760, this intricate and delicate panel depicts a mountainous Italian village landscape scene. Crafted with a palette of soft luminous aquatinted color, the panel adds an old world European or Italian castle interior character to your wall decor. The panel is framed in a handcrafted 18th-century frame that compliments the inlaid panel’s organic and soft lumination.
Like terrazzo, scagliola, a plaster-like composite, came into use during the 17th century and originated from the Italian word scaglia, meaning chips. Scagliola sought to imitate marble and other hard stones used in the vastly more expensive pietra dura creations, such as the pietra dura works commissioned for the Medici family in Florence, Italy. The panel with abrasions and imperfections consistent with the age of the object. The reverse of the panel with areas of patching, repair, and edge chips. The mounting hook has been removed and will be sold without mounting hooks, as pictured. The frame with areas of abrasions and surface wear consistent with the age of the object.
