American impressionist seascape watercolor painting. Dates to the 19th century, circa the 1860s in the Manner of Joseph Mallord William Turner. The colorful and scenic seascape is depicting a vessel at sea in the setting sun. In the manner of JMW Turner, Turner, like this watercolor painting, explored the dramatic possibilities of sea and air. Turner was a master of light, and examples of his works ‘ color-beginnings’, ‘Study of Sunlight’ and ‘Study of Sea: Stormy Sky’ – reflect his exploration of both light’s dynamic possibilities and color.
Turner influenced many landscape painters from the mid 19th century onward, and this work is a clear example of such influence. The colorful and dramatic nature of this seascape painting dates to the 1860s is untitled and unsigned. The painting originates from a New England collection of landscape and seascape paintings, some of which are inscribed and dated and signed by various artists and date to between the 1840-1880s.

Condition
The paper trimmed uneven edges and the surface with areas of abrasions. The sheets reverse with previous mounting residue and foxing stains from the matting—the sheet’s back with toning and a partial J Whatman watermark to the paper.
