This American school watercolor painting for sale of the New England coast dates to the 1860s-1870. Unsigned and undated, this scene of fishing boats along the shore. Depicting scenes of everyday life, such themes were common from the colonial era through to the period of the early 20th century of World War I. This watercolor painting comes to us from a New England collection of American watercolor paintings collected during the mid 20th century that were created during the 1840s-1870s. The scene, possibly from the Rhode Island coast, displays a palette of warm muted tones with an expressive marauding sky. A tinge of the sun shown through the cloud on the right center edge.

The painting in the style of American Realism similar in theme and study to the watercolor painting studies of Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent ref. Chalets, Murren, recto, from Splendid Mountain Watercolours, currently held in the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This painting, composed of watercolor on paper, also serves as a study, possibly in preparation for a larger painting on canvas.
