Product Information
Include scenes of the Rhode Island coastline and Narragansett Bay and shop this Indian Rock watercolor painting for sale. Dated Aug 31, 1863, this watercolor painting sketch Inscribed “Indian Rock” is a warm and welcome American watercolor painting created during the American civil war era. The theme of Indian Rock and Narragansett Bay has been a prolific theme for American landscape painters during the 19th and early 20th century by such prolific American artists and the Hudson river school members Alfred Thompson Bricher.
This painting has had numerous artist attributions to known artists of the period and schools such as the White Mountain School and the Hudson River school, however as this work is not signed, it is not conclusively attributable and therefore retains its American school designation. The work stands primarily as a sketch or study work, possibly preparing for larger work, or as a shore scene landscape study painting. The watercolor painting was collected during the early 20th century in a large collection of 19th-century watercolor paintings and drawings, such as which retain various artists’ signatures and all collectively date between 1840-1880.
With heavily contrasting warm tone colors against the warm blue color draft paper, the spurious and straightforward lines and shapes make this an especially vibrant piece. This work is vibrant, with the elements of the shore noted to the immediate right, ships at sea can be faintly noted in the distance. Day and night intertwine in the image, a welcome addition to various American style interiors from the classic to the modern as a form of genuine wall art decor.
