Product Information
In 1912, a group of painters known as the Ashcan School made a splash with their Midnight Parade painting. The work depicted a New York City street scene, complete with peddlers, pushcarts, and pedestrians. The painting was notable for its gritty realism, which was a departure from the more idealized visions of the city that were popular at the time. Today, the painting is considered an important example of early American Modernism. It hangs in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This painting is a midnight parade of subjects in costume, a leader riding a donkey takes the lead. The painting with a vibrant blue midnight sky and a full moon is shown on the lower left side of the painting. The vibrant and colorful painting presents unique shares elements of both the Ashcan and outsider schools of American art. The painting is signed “R” in the lower right corner.
